Bear Lake

Bear Lake sits on the Utah-Idaho border about 41 miles east of Logan at the top of Logan Canyon. Known for its striking turquoise-blue water, the lake is one of the most distinctive fisheries in the western United States. The lake stretches roughly 20 miles long and 8 miles wide and is home to four fish species found nowhere else in the world, including the Bear Lake cutthroat trout, Bear Lake whitefish, Bear Lake sculpin and Bonneville cisco.

Cutthroat trout fishing is especially productive during winter and spring. Lake trout can grow to impressive sizes and attract anglers from throughout the region. Kokanee salmon are also present.

Each January, the famous Cisco Disco brings visitors to the shoreline as Bonneville cisco move into shallow water to spawn. It is one of Utah's most unique fishing traditions and a memorable winter experience. Fishing is available year-round, including ice fishing opportunities during winter.

Logan River

The Logan River is the crown jewel of fishing in Cache Valley. This blue-ribbon trout stream winds through Logan Canyon for roughly 30 miles alongside Highway 89, creating easy access at dozens of pullouts between Logan and the Idaho border. The river supports rainbow trout, brown trout and native Bear River cutthroat trout throughout its length.

The lower river near First Dam, Second Dam and Third Dam is stocked regularly and provides an excellent option for families, beginner anglers and anyone looking for easy access. Farther upstream, the river transitions into a wild trout fishery that attracts experienced anglers seeking a more traditional mountain fishing experience. Spring and fall often provide the best fishing conditions. Spring runoff can create high, muddy water conditions from late May into June.

Fly Fishing the Logan River

Logan River fly fishing attracts anglers from throughout Utah thanks to healthy trout populations, beautiful canyon scenery and easy public access. Summer hatches provide excellent opportunities for dry fly fishing while nymphing remains productive throughout much of the season. Popular patterns include elk hair caddis, pheasant tail nymphs, blue-wing olives, midge patterns and stonefly imitations. Blacksmith Fork River

The Blacksmith Fork River flows through Blacksmith Fork Canyon southeast of Logan, about 10 miles from town via Highway 101. This smaller river offers a quieter alternative to the Logan River while supporting healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers often appreciate the lighter crowds and peaceful canyon setting. The canyon's slower pace makes it easy to spend a full day on the water while enjoying the scenery.

Some stretches cross private property, so always respect posted signs and access restrictions.

Tony Grove Lake

Tony Grove Lake sits at 8,100 feet in Logan Canyon and is reached by a scenic 7-mile paved road off Highway 89. Stocked annually with rainbow trout, the lake offers one of Cache Valley's most accessible alpine fishing experiences. Shoreline access is easy and the surrounding scenery includes wildflower meadows, evergreen forests and rugged limestone peaks.

Powerbait, worms and small spinners are all productive choices. Fly anglers often find success using mayfly patterns during the summer months. The lake is typically accessible from late June through early October depending on snowpack.
